The Lost Lectures: ii

Alexandra Palace

Continuing from my first post about The Lost Lectures and Nick Davies, angry Marxist and Real Proper Journo, we have…

BARONESS MARTHA LANE FOX OF SOHO, WONDER WOMAN OF THE WEB

Yeah, pretty sweet name, right? Sweeter job title: she’s the UK digital champion.

Anywho, here’s her career/personal life in 20 seconds. 1998. Launches lastminunte.com. Makes bare £££. Falls in love with the interwebs. Crashes at high speed. Is hospitalised for two years. Discovers how the internet could keep her feeling emotionally connected with the outside world. Falls a bit more in love with the interwebs. Is asked to help the 10m Brits who aren’t online to get to grips with the interwebs. Does it. Ponders Big Data and thinks it’s creepy.

Pretty interesting stuff for a neek like me. But as I said, she’s scared of Big Data. I don’t really get that. Why is everyone so afraid of everyone knowing everything about them? The internet provided us access to so much of the world’s knowledge; it’s defined by its lack of privacy. I’m pretty open. But I guess I’m not really in the majority there. She left us with three requests:

  • If you meet someone who’s not online, show them around the web.
  • Don’t use all the big platforms every day. Go to the smaller businesses online (YES, YES, YES).
  • Protect your data.

I’ll adhere to one and two, Baroness.

 Stay tuned for…
